I found the trend of assets held by Sovereign Wealth Funds as particularly interesting; rising from $1.1 trillion in 2000 to more than $5 trillion today. The long- term yield oriented focus of such funds offers an interesting juxtaposition to the incredibly short-term nature of most transactions.
