I think the EU was formed to help the Europeans to stop fighting each other, and I consider it has been successful in achieving that. As David has mentioned several times I hope they can manage to reduce their bureaucracy and somehow do the necessary to survive.

Well said, although I think the European Common Market was formed for that reason.  The EU and the Euro came later and have made the region less prosperous.
