"FYI a map from the French newspaper "La Croix" showing the origin of the electricity in a few countries.
Sorry the paper quality is not so good, you may have something better (or can access through http://www.la-croix.com/ but need to pay and it's in French), but interesting to see these numbers and the stakes for each country. The article ends with something like: everybody agrees on 1 thing: several dozens of years are needed to change energetic practices…"
Eoin Treacy's view Thank you for this informative table highlighting the reliance of some major economies on various fuels. According to these figures France derives 90% of its electricity from nuclear and hydro. China's energy sector, despite an ambitious reactor building program, remains dominated by coal.
As Chinese policy makers weigh their options following the Japanese nuclear accident, they are unlikely to pull back from their nuclear ambitions. The country is already highly reliant on coal, China is now an importer of the commodity and a further concentration on it would be unattractive from a strategy perspective. China is under represented in nuclear energy and this is still the lowest carbon output major energy source available. This suggests that while the nuclear industry has been dealt a blow by the Fukushima crisis, it has not been derailed.
